Billy Budd was adapted for a stage play in the year 1951 by Robert Chapman and Louis O. Coxe and produced on Broadway. Billy Budd won Outer Critics Circle Awards and Donaldson Awards for the best play. It was adapted for opera by Benjamin Britten by the same name and in December 1951 it was first performed. Billy Budd was adapted for film in 1962 by Peter Ustinov and Terence Stamp. After the death of Melville, his widow Elizabeth started to work on the manuscript for publication, but she was confused between the major points of the novel so she gave the work to Raymond M. Weaver and its first version was published in 1924.
