The story revolves around Asher Lev who is a Jew, which was born under the rule of Stalin during which the Soviet Union was hell for religious people. He was born with plenty of artistic abilities during the time in which people from his religion were persecuted. In the book, Asher is misunderstood by everyone in his community and even his own father. He comes to conflict with other people in the society and also, his father does not understand his art. His father is a devoted and religious man who has no understanding of art and believes that art and things of such sort are a waste of time.

 Upon the orders of the leaders, Asher’s father goes to Vienna and his absence, Asher, and his mother live in Brooklyn. During this time, he spends most of his time in art and lesser time for Jewish studies. His mother does not know who she should support, her husband or her son. After some time, the leaders feel that Asher’s art should be polished and send him for tutoring under a famous artist. He creates a piece in which he portrays the torment his mother has faced. Offended by this, his family sends him away.

  • I read this years ago. The imagery inspired me to write a poem about my teacher. In my poem, I sketch her with words rather than with pen as Asher did, I want to reread it now that I am a daily writer.
