The story revolves around Christopher, who is a young boy of 15. At the beginning of the novel, his neighbors’ dog dies and he comes under suspicion. The policemen try to interrogate him but he hits them and as a result is taken to jail where he is released from, after a notice. He decided that he needs to investigate the death of this dog. His father tries to keep him away from this idea but without any use. He solves the mystery of the murdered dog and at the end, he finds his mother, who his father said had died two years ago. He also studies really hard and gets good grades in his A-levels to become a scientist in the future.

The book became quite famous amongst the readers as the title is very eye-catching. The theme of social disability is discussed in the book since Christopher is autistic. The author himself said that “ If he were diagnosed, he would be diagnosed as having Asperger’s syndrome, which is a form of autism. I suppose you’d call it high-function autism in that he can function on, you know, a day-to-day basis, in a kind of rudimentary way. But he has a serious difficulty with life in that he really doesn’t empathize with other human beings. He can’t read their faces. He can’t put himself in their shoes.
